Fire at Island BreezeWe were upstairs when Louise yelled for me to come see. She was in the kitchen and I rushed over to see yellow flames rising above the top of the window to the South. There was a monster fire spewing flame and smoke high enough that it was higher than us at 20 feet. We ran into the bedroom and the fire was still there in the window. It looked like it was behind the shed. We ran out and collected garden hoses and soon I was at the neighbors helping sway the flames that were melting the siding on their house.
When I got to the southeast corner of our lot there was another person trying to stop the fire. I was able to get this bit stopped and turned to leave while they went to the middle of this lot which was really blazing. Several people and the fire dept had showed up so that's where they were. I was worried about our lot as the lot South of us looked like it was getting fire and moving West of the blaze. So then we are trying to get a longer hose but only have five-gallon buckets while getting the hoses connected as they don't reach the fire to the back yet. So finally we get the hose back and I can squirt at these running flames and sparks that ignite other tinder beyond the fire. The pepper tree actually slows the flame and soon another fire truck shows up with a big big hose. I have forgotten to photograph anything as all my energy was to stop the flames. Luckily I did slow the West arm of it long enough for the fire truck to show up after stopping the big flames behind the neighbor's house.
Our neighbor to the East just missed it except for his shed which got the siding burned off. We just missed it because the mass of pepper tree green slowed it down and because I was able to get back to our brush pile and then the lot to the South with water where there was a small crawlable clearing. I wish we had photo's of the first flames we saw because they were so dramatic.
