Bicycling on North Captiva

One night when the moon was nearly full I could see so well I was inspired to go for a bicycle ride. The white sand roads stood out like ribbon on dark velvet. I turned to the south towards the upper state park trail. I’d often taken the beach trail but the moon and night were making me feel adventurous.

I was soon snaking through a winding sandy trail through grassy savannas dotted with Cabbage Palms. The play of shadow and light was fantastic. The trails kept splitting off and I soon dead ended. I walked on a bit further and stood and listened. It was so quiet. Not a sound. I went back to my bike and raced down the roads to the beach and washed my feet in the water as I stared out to the twinkling lights in the west.

With a bicycle there is no need for a golf cart even.

When Will got to be 14 this was my view of him from my bicycle. It takes 8 minutes at full speend to get from our house to the airfield beach. It takes 9 minutes coming back by way of Gulf Lane. Will's old man a dad of 51 can keep up for awhile but now the young man pulls ahead.

Bicycling is a great way to survey the island though. You can also bicycle on the berach at the surf line where the sand is harder. Please rinse off your bicycle after getting it salty.
